What is Christianity?

“The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

Mark 1:1

The Christian message centres on the person of Jesus Christ – who he is and what he came into the world to do.

Who Jesus is

Jesus taught many wonderful things during his life on earth, but at the heart of his teaching were claims about himself – to be the long-promised Saviour; to be God in the flesh; to the maker and ruler of the whole world. He backed up these claims with the most extraordinary life – loving and caring for every person he met, demonstrating his power by healing the sick, calming storms, raising the dead.

Why Jesus came

Jesus proclaimed the good news of a new kingdom, marked by perfect love and peace and justice. Though human beings have rejected God and deserve to be shut out of this kingdom, Jesus suffered the terrible consequences of our sin by dying in our place on the Cross: he faced the punishment we deserve for our rebellion against God. By rising to new life, he demonstrated once and for all that he had paid for our sin and opened the way to new, resurrection life with him.

A Christian is simply someone who follows Jesus for who he is (our Maker and King) and trusts Jesus for what he has done (saving us through his death on the Cross).
